Ward 5 Community Meeting with Kenyan Mcduffie
|
The meeting took place at the Turkey Thicket center in the Gymnasium which involved Council member Kenyan McDuffie, five police commanders of the neighborhood and community members to address some community issues and ways in which to tackle them in the future.
It was really engaging as you get to hear some of the problems faced by the community especially Ward 5 which is the neighborhood DC CityLab is focused on. The council member addressed some procedures for crime reduction and tips to prevent theft. Community complaint- police cameras" 6 entrances" and also stated that crimes happen at 2-3am in the morning. A Solution was suggested to install portable cameras( move it around where there are higher crime rates, but that isn't promised. So a police responded by saying there will day + night police duty, they are also checking daily rates of crimes and knowing how to tackle it. Community complaint: Change of routine: daylight savings, gets dark at 4pm and they were was advised to switch off back and front lights of house. So, police had to change their routine of duty because of daylight savings. One of the commanders stated that they are making use of their List serve; twitter and Facebook report of crimes and pictures of suspects to help track them down by people who know them. Lastly, Complaint: Police needs to put camera's on intersection of Michigan avenue and Perry cross walk on the way to Stroke Spanish school because a lot of children need to cross the road to get to school and cars always speed through that lane without stopping though there is a $250 fine but cars don't stop. My take on this meeting was the community made it so engaging, not only do we just do projects for ward 5 because of the long term commitment Carey had with the city, but I could also see community problems which we can relate to in any place you find yourself. I see some community concerns turning out to be potential projects for CityLab in the future. |
