I found this article from the Washington City Paper interesting particularly because our Citylab project is focused on Art and Gateways to the city. it gives a poll on how much say/input should the public have on public art. Poll was conducted on October 20th-22nd 2014, It arose because " part of the city-sponsored 5x5 public art exhibition, was recently removed after neighborhood activists and D.C. Council member Marion Barry spoke out against it. Another piece in the same exhibit, planned to be installed in the ". The 5x5 is the largest temporary project to see what cultural activity can bring live to the neighborhoods.
Click here to check out the link to the article Poll Result: Community Outreach is important to me because our Citylab project is most likely going to face community challenges as every art project has. I realized that most of the stakeholders we reached out to said major challenges for projects like these is the community outreach; you have to make the community involved in the process of installing art pieces especially in ward 5, all neighborhoods have to come together and be on board e.g NOMA, Bladensburg,Ivy City etc). As the Executive Director of the District Arts and Humanities mentioned that it was one of the challenges they faced too in installation of the New York Avenue Gateway "the wings". Though they involved the community on the panel and throughout the process, It was also a way for the commission to here some of the community concerns. Its difficult to balance public challenges with creativity because they hardly intersect and sometimes causes controversy, at the end of the day you can't satisfy the community as a whole, two individuals process and view art pieces in a different way.
